Symbols of Shiva

You are here: Home / Symbols of Shiva

Puja

Special Pujas are performed at the Ashram on full moon, new moon and other auspicious Balinese energy days called kajeng kliwon and kliwon days to worship, pay homage and make offerings to the Universal Mother/ Father and all their attributes.

Sadhana

Unlock the divine energy within through Sadhana. Sadhana means the completion or carrying out, therefore through spiritual techniques such as through Tantra, Mantra and Yantra we can unlock this divine energy.

Yoga

The four paths of Yoga are Bhakti, Raja, Jnana and Karma Yoga. Yoga (asanas) are practiced at the Ashram. Yoga is a good form of practice to harmonise the system of the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects as well.

Symbols of Shiva

“Ekam sat viprah bahuda wadanti,

Agni yama matariswam”

God is only One, but the wise call Him by many Names,

“Agni yama matariswam”

In Indonesia (Nusantara) there are many archaeological sites remaining of its ancient Hindu and Buddhist history. Great Hindu and Buddhist temple structures and holy statues that represented a great past culture and beauty across Indonesia. Bali has many holy temples as its name “Island of a Thousand Temples” and within some of these temples are archaeological holy statues from its past history. Such symbols as the holy symbol “Linga Yoni”and Shiva’s vehicle Nandi or as called in Indonesia Nandini as well as Ganesha. Bali has many holy springs for water purification that also gave the Island the name “Holy Water Religion” or “Island of Holy Water”. At Ashram Munivara these symbols where crafted by the new generation of Balinese to worship these symbols and their deeper meanings and awaken these energies within ourselves with holy knowledge.

Holy knowledge always is passed down from holy spiritual teachers (Guru) to their students (Siswa) therefore in the Ashram there is a shrine called the Linga Guru. The holy teacher is a beacon or lingam and shines the light to dispel ignorance to guide the worshipper out of the darkness and to bring the student to peace and harmony.

Someone who has strong determination in Bhakti can have holy union with God wherever and whenever his/her mind focuses on God, whichever name of God he/she believes in. Whenever this happens, God is with you.

Linga Yoni : Centre of Worship. Here we come before the main shrine at Ashram Munivara which is called the Linga Yoni.
The Sivalingam at Ashram Munivara has 4 faces inscribed with the Omkara symbol. This means that no matter where you stand, you are facing God. Inside the Lingam are 4 statues: Shiva, Shakti (Durga/Parvati), Ganesha and Agastya.

Linga Yoni (Shiva and Shakti) from the Lingam which has three parts to the base of the shrine:

• Om (Omkara) is the sacred scriptural symbol of the Supreme Lord/Hyang Widhi as the source of all things.
• Round form of the Linga is called Shiva Bhaga.
• Hexigon form of the Linga is called Vishnu Bhaga.
• Four-sided form of the Linga is called Brahma Bhaga.
• Yoni is the base of the Linga and represents Pradhana/Parvati (Universal Mother).
